the marriage of Princess Elizabeth

In the aftermath of World War II, two years after its end, an American woman of modest means read an article in a newspaper about the marriage of Princess Elizabeth, who would later become Queen of England. The article said that the princess would be buying only a limited number of dresses for the wedding because clothing was rationed.

The woman was deeply moved by the story and decided to send a gift to the princess. She made a simple wedding dress and wrote a letter to the princess explaining why she was sending her the gift. She said that she hoped the princess would accept her humble gift, but that she would leave it up to the princess to return the dress if she did not want it.

Princess Elizabeth accepted the gift from the American woman and wrote to her to thank her and invite her to attend the wedding..

The Washington Post heard about the story and decided to send the American woman to England to attend the royal wedding. The newspaper offered the woman $1,000, a large sum of money at the time, to be its correspondent there and to report her observations and impressions in her simple, unpretentious language.

The American woman accepted the offer and made the trip to England. The newspaper continued to publish her spontaneous, simple reports, which were very well received by readers
